Artist Red Hong Yi created the Malaysian "HOPE" poster on 1 May 2018, 8 days before Malaysia's 14th General Election. It was created first as an image to be widely distributed through social media. Over the days leading to the election, profile photos were changed to the HOPE image to show support to the then-opposition, Pakatan Harapan (Coalition of Hope). The image also appeared on LED screens in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.

The original image was done in red petals and had the word "UBAH" (Change) but due to concerns that the messaging could be troublesome during that political climate, Red changed the slogan for the poster to a yellow version with the word HOPE, and a few days later to this light blue version, similar to the light blue tones of the Pakatan Harapan flag. Pakatan Harapan won a majority in parliament, ending the 60-year reign of Malaysia's ruling party.

Red drew historical inspiration from Shepard Fairey's Obama Hope poster and Hamilton's poster. She hopes this poster will be one that would remind people of 9th May 2018 - of the change that can happen when a country unites through hope.
